my site-specific and installation work began as a series of clay installations. in addition to impermanence, the agenda for the work was to be anti-object (essentially the antithesis of the medium). for me the idea of using the wheel--a primarily hand-oriented tool and the most recognizable of the discipline--became the catalyst. i wanted to redefine its use while developing its potential as a tool to engage the space surrounding it. the results being somewhere between "throwing gone bad" and spin art, the true inspiration came from the walls of academia. the wheels in the studio, organized typically along the walls, always created beautiful, yet inadvertent, clay arcs formed by overzealous students. the clay installations are a play on this idea. since the time of this work, i have continued to explore installations with more of a focus on site-specificity via emphasis upon the history of the location.
